If I could travel back to 1979 I would head straight to Magic Kingdom park, tear an E Ticket from my Adventure Ticket Book and climb aboard 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: Submarine Voyage. Together with the Walt Disney World Skyway, the Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion, this opening day attraction was what my childhood dreams were made of.
Based on the exploration adventures of Captain Nemo and his crew, the Submarine Voyage was a twenty minute underwater attraction that allowed guests to feel like they were submerged in the ocean deep – complete with a giant squid! The whole lagoon was beautiful to look at and made up most of the original Fantasyland. When the Submarine Voyage was removed in 1994, the lagoon was filled in and Fantasyland looked and felt unbalanced for a long time. New attractions have since been added with nods to the long lost lagoon in their theming, but there are some classics that are just irreplaceable.
