20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA: SUBMARINE VOYAGE

If I could travel back to 1971 I would head straight to Walt Disney World – tear an E Ticket from my Adventure Ticket Book then climb aboard 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: Submarine Voyage.  Together with the Walt Disney World Skyway, the Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion – the Submarine Voyage was the Disney stuff that my childhood dreams were made of.

Based on the fantastic exploration adventures of Captain Nemo and his crew, the Submarine Voyage was an underwater attraction that allowed guests to feel like they were really submerging in the ocean deep.  Giant squid and all!

The lagoon itself was beautiful to look at and made up most of Fantasyland.  When the attraction disappeared in 1994 – the lagoon was filled in.  Fantasyland looked and felt unbalanced for a very long time.  The recently completed expansion at Walt Disney World pays homage to the long lost lagoon in many new details of Fantasyland’s theming.  I’m looking forward to what magic will come next.
